The various wars that will be fought between my Imagi-Nations have to take place somewhere. Some Imagi-Nations I have read about go into great detail, drawing up detailed maps of the countries involved, assigning population levels to towns and cities, working out how the economy would work, which areas produce what, etc. etc.
I prefer a less detailed approach, particularly since I will be playing this solo. I'm aiming for a more narrative driven game. If an army is moving up the road from Erdenz to Fustenburg I will determine what kind of encounter they have with the enemy and the terrain will be set up to loosely match the corresponding scenario from One Hour Wargames. I don't need to know how many miles from Fustenburg they are or what the terrain in that area would 'really' be.
Following on from this, I don't need to know precisely where the armies are or what units are in them. The army compositions will be determined by dice roll for each battle, which I rationalise by assuming units are being detached from the army constantly, sent away to garrison somewhere, escort convoys, scout the local area, and likewise reinforcements are arriving and units are returning after completing their tasks.
To start my campaign I have two very basic maps.
Here we have our two Imagi-Nations with the small Duchy of Dorst bordering both. Dorst will be the cause of the conflict between them and the site of the war.
The capital of Dorst is Fustenburg, it's only other towns are Proltz to the west and Erdenz to the south. Maximillian, Duke of Dorst, is elderly and in poor health, Childless and with no surviving siblings his closest relative is his nephew, King Frederick of GrosseKleinStadt. The political class in Dorst comes from the ranks of the merchants and manufacturers who seek closer ties to Bomenburst, a constitutional monarchy, rather than to the absolutism of King Frederick's realm.
The year is 1848, revolutions spring up across Europe, and life in Dorst will never be the same again...
